Public awareness campaign for prevention of abuse of children/adults with intellectual disability “LIFE AS A SAFE ADVENTURE”

          In the frame of activities for 3rd of December - International day of persons with disabilities, Republic center for support of persons with intellectual disability -PORAKA launched a public awareness campaign for prevention of abuse of children/adults with intellectual disability ”Life as a save adventure”. The promotion was held on Wednesday, 2nd December 2009 at 10.30 a.m. in Skopje.
          Campaign is addressed on the general public with the focus on the persons with intellectual disability, theirs families and professionals working on this field. The goal of the campaign is raising awareness about the need for development of the strategy for prevention relating the abuse and violence of children/adults with intellectual disability. Two booklets “Childhood, Disability and Violence” and “Life as a save adventure” as well short movie “Sara’s adventure” has been promoted on this event.
          Moderator of the event was Mr.Petrit Saracini - Program Manager in the Macedonian Institute for Media.
Foreword presentation gave Mr. Cedomir Trajkovski, President of Republic center for support of persons with intellectual disability - PORAKA, making an overview about the International day of persons with disabilities, rights of persons with intellectual disability in the society and importance of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disability.
          Mr. Djeljal Bajrami, Minister of Labor and Social Policy, giving full support to this awareness campaign, emphasized the importance of support for persons with intellectual disability and theirs families. Also, he asked for collaboration of the NGO sector in this process of prevention of domestic violence and abuse.
          Presentation of Dr. Vasilka Dimoska, Program Manager of the Republic center - PORAKA, was more oriented on the issues of violence and disability. Briefly, she presented the problem of domestic violence and abuse in the families with member with intellectual disability, importance of the approach of professionals working on this field and need of strategy for prevention. She used this opportunity to promote two booklets relating this topic: Childhood, Disability and Violence; and Life as a save adventure.
          Mrs. Jasminka Friscik - Director of the Association for Emancipation, Solidarity and Equalization of women, made an overview of the experiences on the field of domestic violence and women in R. Macedonia. She also, notified the problem of double discrimination of women with disabilities.
          Republic center for support of persons with intellectual disability - PORAKA for contribution of the work of day centers of PORAKA in 2009 awarded with Plaque: City of Skopje, Municipality of Kumanovo, Municipality of Ohrid and Acknowledgement for the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy.
