Activities of the Republic center – PORAKA in cooperation with NDI and IPD

Highlighting the need of urgent ratification of the UN Convention on the rights for persons with disability

RIGHTS TO BECOME REALITY!

In the frame of the program activities in 2010, Republic center for support of persons with intellectual disability-PORAKA continuously lobby for ratification of the UN Convention on the rights for persons with disability. Taking in consideration the importance of this legally binding agreement, PORAKA realized several activities in order to highlight the need for urgent ratification of the UN Convention.
Within the program ”Strengthening the citizen involvement in the legislative process” of National Democratic Institute (NDI) and Institute for Parliamentary Democracy (IPD), PORAKA is involved as a partner organization. Within this partnership, PORAKA in cooperation and with support from NDI and IPD undertook the following activities.

  1. Article “Our rights to be reality” written by Dr. Vasilka Dimoska, Program Manager of PORAKA, published in daily newspaper “DNEVNIK” 20 March 2010.
  2. Preparation and distribution of the informative material relating UN Convention: flayers, posters and booklet in easy to read format with the financial support of National Endowment for Democracy.
  3. Meetings of representatives of local branches of PORAKA with the Members of the Parliament in collaboration with the offices for communication with citizens supported by the NDI and IPD.
  4. Within the “Open day of the Parliament”, on 7th May 2010, representatives of PORAKA together with the users of the day center – PORAKA Skopje had a meeting with Mr. Trajko Veljanovski – President of the Parliament of Republic of Macedonia. The representatives of PORAKA presented the importance of urgent ratification of the UN Convention to the President.  
  5. Supported by “Media Print Macedonia”, PORAKA inserted the flyers “Rights to become reality” in the daily newspaper “Dnevnik” on 24th of June 2010.
  6. The Vice-President of the Assembly of Republic of Macedonia, Mrs. Svetlana Jakimovska, on the 108th session of the Assembly held on 24th June 2010, asked a parliamentary question regarding the UN Convention. The MP question was initiated by PORAKA.

Focus of these activates  is to emphasize the importance of the UN Convention on the rights for persons with disability, need for ratification as a part of the process for equalization of the rights of persons with disability as an equal citizens in the society.
