WORKSHOPS FOR SWOT ANALYSES OF THE DAY CENTERS AND OF THE LOCAL BRANCHES OF PORAKA

     One of the goals of the Republic Center for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA is coordination and support of the work of its local branches. Therefore, in the past years the Republic Center – PORAKA has organized seminars for strengthening the capacity of the local branches.

     The first cycle of seminars has been held in the period from 1998 till 2000, in which each local branch had its own representative/participant. The second cycle has been held in the period from September 2003 till September 2004. This cycle in continuation has been followed by 58 – 60 parents and activists – representatives of the local branches, members of the Republic Center – PORAKA.

     While conducting the both cycles of training, among other subjects, special attention was given to SWOT analysis, instrument which is very useful for assessment of the actual situation within the organization, with all its strengths and weaknesses, but also the opportunities and threats that come from the environment where the organization works. This instrument, if it is impartially prepared, represents solid position for preparation of real and achievable action plans of the organization, as well as finding out ways for improvement and overcoming the weakness within the organization.

     Therefore, the Republic Center for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – PORAKA requested from its local branches, but also from the services that PORAKA manages, to prepare SWOT analyses regarding the organizations and the services (day centers). Two workshops have been held after the preparation of these SWOT analyses.

     The first workshop has been organized in Skopje , in the premises of the Republic Center - PORAKA on 12.04.2006, and was aimed for the day centers. The participants of this workshop were representatives from the day centers managed by the Republic Center – PORAKA. The second workshop was organized in Struga, in Education and Recreation Center of the City Red Cross Skopje from 09.06. till 11.06.2006. Participants on this workshop were representatives of the local branches that previously prepared SWOT analyses regarding their organizations and submitted them to the Republic Center – PORAKA on time.

     During both workshops, each of the participants had the opportunity to present the SWOT analysis, but also to present the recent activities taken by their organization. The team of the Republic Center – PORAKA, and the other participants, gave remarks and advice relating the work of each local organization, and at the same time were emphasizing the positive examples of successful practice.
